GRAPHITE PENCIL SUPPLY LIST (must have for all students)
GRAPHITE PENCILS - HB and 2H. You may prefer the lead holder and sharpener to the traditional wooden pencil. Good quality pencils or lead holders will benefit your drawings.
DRAWING PAPER - 11x14 Strathmore Dry Medium (heavy weight, multipurpose), Stonehenge 90lb. White Vellum Drawing Paper or Borden and Riley #116 Artist Sketch Vellum. Papers that are too thin or without a good surface will make drawing more difficult.....a good paper will help your efforts =)
SHARPENER - the simple hand held metal sharpener works well but you need to have a baggy or something to catch the shavings in while you sit with your drawing. Battery sharpeners are very nice and you may bring one if you like...but they eat up your pencils pretty fast. Either one is fine or both.
SOFT BRUSH or FEATHER - to gently brush drawing dust from your page.
ERASERS - soft kneaded eraser, and white nylon eraser.
ERASER GUARD - a metal eraser guard, found in the drafting section.
TRACING PAPER - Canson Vellum Tracing 11x14 or 9x12 regular tracing paper is fine too.
RULER - transparent 12 in. ruler
It’s nice to support our local stores when possible. You can find some supplies at A.C.Moore and Michaels, or Jerry’s Art-a-rama in Norwalk. There are many good art suppliers on the web: Dick Blick, Jerry’s Artorama, The Italian Art Store, and Cheap Joes are all good companies.
COLOR PENCIL SUPPLY LIST (for all students signing up for color pencil or watercolor class please print out the color wheel linked at the top of the page and bring it with you to class)
COLOR PENCILS - Derwent Artist or Derwent Studio, or Caran D’ash pencils are a good start. Faber Castelle also offers nice pencil sets. A set of 36 pencils is plenty to begin with. If you already have your own pencils you are welcome to bring them. Do not buy Prisma Color Pencils with the exception of Veri-thins. You can buy individual pencils that supplement the smaller set as you need them. You may like to supplement your sets of pencils with single colors which can be bought online.

I find large sets of pencils are generally less expensive online. If you can find better prices on the internet or in art catalogues take advantage of it. It’s nice to support our local stores when possible.
Michaels carries “Derwent Studio” do not purchase Derwent Suprasoft. The colors are too bright for natural subjects. If you use the coupon in the weekend papers you can sometimes get 40-50% off

WATERCOLOR SUPPLY LIST
Learn how to mix any color under the rainbow with 6 colors....simple color theory at your fingertips.
The first part of class will be learning how to mix and glaze your own colors, how to lay down an even wash and become comfortable with using watercolors. The second part of the workshop will be matching colors found in botanical subjects =)
Supplies you will need for the workshop include a 7 well palette, a #2 and #4 round watercolor brush and 3-4 sheets of 11x14, 140lb hot press white watercolor paper. A white plate or pallet for mixing colors.
Isabey Kolinsky brushes are very good brushes if you want sable. I suggest the Princeton Art Brush Company synthetic brushes for first time users (I use these myself) . These can all be found online. No. 0, 1, 2, 4, 6 is a good set of starter brushes.
I use mostly M. Graham Gouache and Schminke watercolors in my pallet. If you prefer to use other brands of watercolor that is fine. Please be sure that you have six comparable colors from you brand of choice...you are welcome to bring your own pallet of colors as well =) You can use watercolors by Schmincke, M. Graham, Windsor Newton, Holbein....professional grade...not student grade.
Colors for you pallet:
Cadmium Yellow - yellow with a red bias
Azo Yellow – yellow with a blue bias.
Cadmium Red – red with a yellow bias.
Quinacridone Rose – red with a blue bias.
Phthalocyanine Blue – blue with a yellow bias.
Ultramarine Blue – blue with a red bias.

NATURE JOURNALING SUPPLY LIST
Essentials:
Back pack or bag to carry supplies.
Journal 9x11 or 9x5 journals or in this general size, these journals can be bought at any art store. Paper should be acid free with heavier paper that accepts watercolor this will allow you more freedom to apply color. You may also use cold press watercolor paper journals for those of you who would like to work with watercolor pencils :)
Fine tip marker (micron .005-.01 and 1 are my favorite) there are many fine tips on the market, make sure they are permanent ink. There are also sets of microns available that you can purchase...just be sure that they have some fine points in the set.
Ninji Watercolor Brush great for the field if your using watercolor. Great for the field :)
Bring drinking water .
Camp stool and a hat to shade from the sun.
Optional:
Pencils (preferably a HB and or a 2H)and erasers if you want to work in graphite.
A small selection of color pencils or watercolor pencils if you want to introduce colors into your studies. A water brush if you would like to create washes or bring a brush and small container of water.
Small clear ruler to add to notes about size of your subject.
A magnifying glass to see details or a loop.
